Governor's Commission discusses 24 Hr Care to Improve Healthcare Delivery in Florida

The Governor's Commission on Healthcare and Hospital Funding met with FSASC members yesterday, Aug. 12th, in Tallahassee to discuss ways to improve the healthcare delivery system in Florida.  FSASC Board Member Dr. David Shapiro described ambulatory surgery centers as a key part of healthcare reform and testified "in light of the many benefits ASCs have brought to the nation's health care system, policymakers should develop and implement payment and coverage policies that increase access to, and utilization of, ASCs". Committee Chairman, State Rep. Jason Brodeur, told the panel that he planned to propose 24 hour ASC again in 2016.  He also held up data showing that the average colonoscopy performed at a Florida ASC's cost less than half what it cost at a hospital.

Carlos Beruff, Chair of the Commission stated "I think I speak for all of the members when I say that there are lessons to be learned from the cost savings and operational efficiencies at these facilities.  I know I will be drawing from the discussions in this meeting as we continue to look at other areas of the healthcare system."

Thank you to Dr. Shapiro for presenting to the committee the valuable services ASC's provide.  To read the full article click here!
